Is emotional abuse therapy right for me if my partner isn't always abusive?

Abusers are rarely abusive all the time. Emotional abuse is still abuse even when periods of warmth or connection are present. The alternation between loving and hurtful behavior is itself a pattern that creates confusion and keeps people in harmful relationships.

Why is couples therapy not recommended when emotional abuse is present?

Couples therapy is generally considered unhelpful and possibly harmful when abuse is present. An abusive partner may use the sessions to further manipulate, the victim may not feel safe being honest, and the abuser may retaliate afterward for perceived criticism in the session.

Do I have to decide to leave my relationship to start therapy?

No. Therapy does not require any decisions about leaving or staying. The focus is on helping clients gain clarity about their experience and make choices that align with their own values and safety, at their own pace.

Does Amanda Morris accept insurance?

Amanda Morris is currently in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Optum, and United Healthcare, but is transitioning to a fully private-pay practice in 2026. Superbills are available for out-of-network reimbursement. Thrizer can be used to help clients access out-of-network benefits.

What is the therapy fee?

Individual sessions are $250 for 60 minutes. Group therapy sessions are $100 for 90 minutes. A free 15-minute consultation is available.
